    Colorful Mammoth Tusk Tip
    Mammuthus primigenius
    Siberia, Russia

A Mammoth Tusk is certainly one of the most naturally aesthetic and artistic of any variety of vertebrate fossil specimen. The modified teeth of these ancient elephantine beasts are found often in melting permafrost layers of Pleistocene ("Ice Age") deposits. This extraordinary tip is intensely colorful with a very exotic patterning. Replacement of the original organic material by the mineral Vivianite has resulted in patches of greenish-blue emanating from the tip all the way down the tusk. It features an almost "animal-like" striping of jagged brown intermingled with other colors. With next to no visible restoration, this piece is as attractive as it is interesting. As the market for Mammoth Tusks has evolved over the past few decades, pieces like this do not come up very often and, when they do, usually come with a severe premium. This specimen is quite meaningful at some 30 inches (76.2 cm) - yet it is a very manageable size that can be easily displayed most anywhere in the custom wooden cradling base, that was made specifically for this quality piece. From the polished tip, to the exposed end cavity, where the concentric growth patterns of the well preserved internal structure are readily seen, this is a superlative vertebrate specimen.
    Overall Measurements: 30.0 x 4.6 x 10.9 inches (76.2 x 11.8 x 27.6 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.
