Description

Cave Bear Skull
Ursus spelaeus
Pleistocene
Italy

Cave Bears were amazing animals that, not surprisingly, lived much of their time in caves, to avoid the harsh conditions of the "Ice Age." Going extinct during the Pleistocene, it was not likely that early man preyed upon these majestic beasts but may have directly competed with them for cave dwellings, and humans certainly respected, if not actually worshipped, Cave Bears based on certain evidence. Distant cousins of the modern Brown Bear, Cave Bears were much larger, and likely had a primarily vegetarian diet. Presented on a custom artisan metal base, this fossil skull is massive in both size and form. As the Cave Bear could grow to heights in excess of 10 feet (3 meters) weighing 1,000 pounds (455 kilograms), it makes sense their skulls would be massive like this exemplary example. While this fossil indicates the presence of substantial restoration as part of the preparation process, the skull is solid and exhibits the impressive teeth expected with any Cave Bear jaw. The broad, domed skull has a pronounced forehead, and the preserved bone features a mottled, golden-yellow coloration with contrasting patches of black.
Overall Measurements: 16.50 x 16.00 x 10.00 inches (41.91 x 40.64 x 25.40 cm)

[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
