Brenham MeteoritePallasite, PMG-an
Kansas, USA - (37° 34' 57"N, 99° 9' 49"W)
Found: 1882
This monstrous specimen represents a superb example of a flight-oriented meteorite. Evidenced by its parabolic shape indicative of a heat shield, this meteorite did not "tumble" as it plunged through Earth's atmosphere. In contrast, its Earth-facing surface was ablated and sculpted smooth by friction with the atmosphere resulting in a curvature that effectively deflected the fiery plasma surrounding it during its descent. Flight-oriented meteorites are exceedingly rare and sought after as examples are reminiscent of the heat shields on manned space capsules. With its most distinguished provenance, the story of this fine Brenham fragment began in 2006 outside of Greensburg, Kansas when the complete meteorite was discovered. Found by Geologist Philip Mani and Adventurer Steve Arnold, this piece remains in its "as is" condition and remains one of the most significant American Meteorite finds in recent history. Present at its discovery were legendary Arthur Ehlman, then Curator of the esteemed Monnig Meteorite Gallery at Texas Christian University (TCU), and Linda Krause, an Astronomer at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History (FWMS&H), among several others. This beautiful Brenham was then loaned to the FWMS&H by Phil Mani where it was prominently displayed by the Museum in its Noble Planetarium from its grand re-opening in November 2009 until March 2020 and has never been available for acquisition - until now.
Among numerous superlative attributes, this meteorite belongs to the rare variety classified as Pallasites representing less than 1 percent of all known types and are stony-iron meteorites composed of naturally occurring Peridot 'gemstone' forms of the mineral Olivine surrounded by a metallic matrix of iron-nickel. The dimpled texture of the surface of this meteorite is evidence of its extraterrestrial semi-precious gem interior composition. The Brenham Pallasite, with its natural coral-orange colored exterior, is an absolute showpiece. The specimen weighs some 320 pounds (145.5 kilograms), and an image of the big meteorite on display at the FWMS&H is featured under the Specimens section of the Wikipedia entry for Brenham.
Overall Measurements: 21.00 x 17.00 x 11.00 inches (53.34 x 43.18 x 27.94 cm), weighs approximately 145.5 kilograms (320.77 pounds)
