    Description

    Bournonite on Quartz
Herodsfoot Mine, Lanreath, Cornwall, England, UK

"A rose of bournonite wheels abut [sic] 2 inches in diameter growing on quartz. Traded this specimen from the George Vaux collection from Bryn Mawr College near Philadelphia when Harold Arndt was still curator"
    - Rock H. Currier

Although 'cogwheel' Bournonite specimens have been found in a number of world localities, they are never abundant and the standard by which all are measured remains the ones from the Herodsfoot Mine in Cornwall. The best, such as the one offered here, feature large and lustrous crystals displaying that distinctive habit. The fact that this group is still on the original matrix is remarkable since most specimens are now loose crystals. Vaux scored, and so did Rock. This classic specimen has an illustrious history that originates with renowned collector Clarence Bement, who traded/sold it to the famous mineral dealer: George English, who in turn sold it to George Vaux in 1894. It has a custom acrylic stand and the original Vaux and Bement (?) labels.
    Overall Measurements: 3.5 x 2.8 x 2.0 inches (9.0 x 7.0 x 5.0 cm)
    Offered at no reserve

Provenance: Ex. Bryn Mawr College, Ex. George Vaux, Ex. George English, Ex. Clarence Bement Collections [RHC #1586, acquired 1971]
