    Description

AN IMPRESSIVE AND DYNAMIC ORTHOCERAS SLAB
    Orthoceras sp.
    Ordovician
    Sahara Desert, nr Talmud, Morocco

This large orthoceras plaque is a highly-polished and a striking display piece for these cone-shaped belemnite fossils. This plaque also contains several unusually large examples of orthoceras. Using simple hand-tools, Moroccan craftsmen have painstakingly sculpted each fossil so that they stand out from the matrix, creating a terrific sense of three-dimensionality. The ancient ancestor of today's squid and chambered nautilus, orthoceras swam in the oceans of what is now the Sahara Desert over 450 million years ago. The vivid white highlights of the fossilized remains of the shell stand in stunning contrast to the black ground and speckled gray matrix. Although this plate suggests a rush of movement, the orientation of the separate individuals is due to the action of the ancient ocean currents. Each shell corpse would slowly float to the seabed, and then be swept along with dozens of its fellows in the ever-rolling ocean. The irregularly-shaped plaque measures approximately 52 x 38 inches.
