ALLENDE SLICE - SOME OF THE OLDEST MATERIAL IN THE UNIVERSE
    Stony, Carbonaceous Chondrite, Type III
    Pueblito de Allende, Chihuahua, Mexico (26° 58'N, 105° 19'W)
    Witnessed Fall: February 8, 1969, 7h05m GMT.

The Carbonaceous Chondrite that exploded on entry over Northern Mexico near the Pueblito de Allende, came to be called Allende for short. The fireball of its entry was seen for hundreds of miles and when the event was over, literally thousands of fusion crusted individuals were recovered. The strewn field was huge (8 x 50 km). When analysis of this unique meteorite began, the real significance started to sink in. In 1969, NASA was in full swing. Laboratories all over the U.S. were eagerly awaiting a chance to look at the first lunar material to be brought back to Earth, by Apollo 11. Interestingly, Allende happened to fall before the Apollo 11 material was recovered and so the enormous amount of Allende material that became available allowed samples to be distributed to all of those institutions just itching to get their hands on extra-terrestrial material. Allende did not disappoint. It was later admitted that the information derived from Allende was of far greater importance than that of the later Apollo mission. Research into isotope ratios indicated that it formed from the remains of a supernova that exploded before our solar system formed. Weird elements weren't the only strange things about Allende - Amino Acids, the building blocks of proteins and genetic material were also recovered; some of those amino acids are not found on Earth. Microdiamonds appeared as inclusions, and the really interesting components were the CAI's (Calcium- Aluminum Inclusions) that appear as white aggregates against the dark background of the meteorite ground mass. Age determinations show that they are 4.567 billion years old. Our planet didn't finish coming together until 4.54 billion years ago. As a consequence of the research on Allende, our knowledge of cosmic processes, including the formation of our solar system and planet, has grown enormously, but that process is hardly over. This 142 gram slice of Allende was cut from an individual Allende meteorite and is polished on both sides, allowing a clear view of the white CAI's that densely crowd the dark carbonaceous matrix of the slab. Fusion crust is visible over the entire perimeter. We sometimes joke about something or someone being "Older than Dirt." This Lot contains the oldest things that you can hold in your hand. Older than the Dinosaurs. Older than the first life on this planet. Older than Earth. Older than our Solar System. Older than ... dirt.
    Overall Measurements: 6.69 x 4.72 x 0.13 inches (17 x 12 x 0.32 cm), weighs 142 gm (5 ozs.)
