Description

A RARE THEROPOD JAW SECTION
Carcharodontosaurus saharicus
Cretaceous, Cenomanian stage
Kem-Kem Basin, South of Taouz, K'Sar es Souk Province, Morocco

This extremely rare Theropod jaw section was discovered in the fecund sandstone deposits of the Kem-Kem Basin, Morocco. It is the largest piece of skull that we know of from this giant carnosaur, after the well-known skull at the Chicago Field Museum (the first discovered example of the species, excavated in 1995). From this jaw section, or maxilla, it has been estimated that the animal's skull was 5 feet 4 inches in length. At 45 feet long, therefore, this would have been 5 feet longer than any T-Rex yet unearthed - the largest carnivore that ever walked the earth. The maxilla has 8 excellent teeth, with excellent enamel and serrations. None are broken, only two or three have had restoration, and the longest protrudes 3 inches. Additionally, in some of the empty sockets new tooth growth is visible, making this a fossil of particular interest. The complete specimen measures 19¾ inches in length and is mounted on a low-profile metal display stand.
