    Anetoceras sp.
    Emsian Age, Devonian (407 - 398 MYA)
    Hmar Lachdade, Erfoud, Morocco

As much as humans are fond of our supposed position on top of the pyramid, these lowly relatives of the squid or octopi of today have a far more impressive chapter in the book of Life On Earth than we do. Accounts vary, but there is general agreement that this diverse family of ocean dwellers lasted over 300 million years, a record we have so far logged 1/60th of, at the most, assuming we include "Lucy" of Olduvai fame. This particular example dates to the Emsian Age, when Ammonites were all the rage as sea-life goes. The coiled yet non-contiguous habit is quite uncommon among Ammonites, possibly due to a relative lack of robustness leading to an early inclusion in someone else's diet. Whatever the reason, today these tend to be found in a small area of Morocco, where they are extracted and carefully freed from the surrounding matrix, a difficult and time-consuming job. The matrix is typical for this area and the condition is very good for this genus. Approximately 5 inches in diameter and approximately 5.75 inches tall include the matrix base.
