Description

Harry Govier Seeley Wooden Compass

This brass surveyor's compass, housed within the original wooden case, is associated with the eminent British paleontologist Harry Govier Seeley, whose faint handwritten inscription, "H.G. Seeley / Magdalen[e] College, Cambridge," remains visible on the instrument. Seeley, a leading figure in 19th-century vertebrate paleontology, is best known for his landmark (1887) division of dinosaurs into the two great orders Saurischia and Ornithischia, a classification that continues to underpin modern dinosaur paleontology today. The compass itself features a finely engraved dial with cardinal and intercardinal points, a blued steel needle, and a protective glazed cover, reflecting the practical precision of scientific instruments used in field and academic settings of the period. The wooden case and instrument exhibit expected visible surface wear, consistent with handling and sustained use, in keeping with a utilitarian object that may have accompanied Seeley during his early fossil studies or scholarly academic work at Cambridge, when he worked extensively in the Woodwardian Museum, under the oversight of Adam Sedgewick. Personally inscribed items from Seeley's Cambridge period are exceedingly rare, and this example offers a direct and tangible connection to a formative era in the history of vertebrate paleontology and scientific classification.
Measurements: 3.03 x 2.95 x 0.79 inches (7.70 x 7.50 x 2.00 cm)
