"Two Cretaceous Archelons" - 1926
    Charles R. Knight, American (1874-1953)

Charles R. Knight, legendary American painter of dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals, was actually legally blind and pursued his artistic talents with the aid of specially-designed glasses. He often visited the world-renowned American Museum of Natural History in New York City where his passion for nature was cultivated and his career as a painter of prehistoric animals began. Although often criticized by the likes of museum curators that his works were more artistic than scientific, many modern paleontological experts and contemporary natural history museums validate Knight and continue to feature his enduring works. This original oil painting, "Two Cretaceous Archelons" was painted in 1926 and was exhibited in "Dinosaurs, Mammoths, and Cavemen - The Art of Charles R. Knight" at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County in 1980. His legacy continues as his works grace many institutions the world over. The scene depicted in this fabulous work features a pair of Archelon sea turtles in the Cretaceous ocean surfacing to examine their surroundings. A strip of land populated with trees is visible in the distance as these giant sea turtles, indeed the largest ever documented, with fossils measuring 13 feet (4 meters) in length, are seemingly all alone in the ancient sea of the Late Cretaceous Period - some 65 to 75 million years ago. The piece has a light tan color wood frame, and the image is held in the frame by a one inch cream mat. Frame: 21.5 x 15. 75 x 1.5 inches (54.61 x 40.01 x 3.81 cm). Image: 19 x 13.5 inches (48.26 x 34.29 cm).

Provenance: Purchased from the private collection of Rhoda Knight Kalt (granddaughter of the artist)
