Description

    Two San Juan Buffware Jars
    Circa 1930
    (A) Height 6 1/4 in. Diameter 8 3/4 in.
    (B) Height 7 1/2 in. Diameter 8 in.

The first example is characterized by a flat base, flaring sides, and a high shoulder tapering to a short neck. The jar is made of micaceous clay decorated with incised linear designs in rectangular, triangular, and chevron patterns. The rim and underbody are polished.
The second example is characterized by a flat base, flaring sides, high shoulder, and a tall neck. This jar is also made of micaceous clay and decorated with incised linear designs in castellated bands around the center and a chevron pattern around the shoulder. The body is lightly polished while both neck and underbody are unpolished.
The incised pottery popular with San Juan artists was based on prehistoric examples excavated at the nearby Otowi ruins. These two examples reflect a contemporary interpretation of the ancient decorative process.
