DescriptionCrow Tobacco Bag
Length 26 1/4 in. Width 5 in.
This native tanned deerskin bag is partially beaded on each side with stylized floral designs in navy blue, sky blue, red, and yellow, all outlined in white. The bag has been rubbed with yellow ochre overall; hide fringing decorates the bottom. The beading is typical of Crow floral designs that became popular toward the end of the 19th century. These stylized floral patterns can also be noted on vests, coats, trousers, gauntlets, and moccasins from the period. (For examples of this art form, well documented to place and time, see: O'Connor, Nancy; Fred E. Miller: Photographer of the Crows, University of Montana, Missoula and Carnan VidFilm, Malibu, 1985, plates 25, 35, 65, 67, 77 and 78.)
