    Description

    Tsavorite Garnet
Merelani Hills, Lelatema Mts, Simanjiro District, Manyara Region, Tanzania

The sad part of Tsavorite mining is that most of the gem material recovered is not well-formed crystals, but rather fragments of crystals due to immense, crushing pressures exerted on the 'pods' of Tsavorite, by the deeply buried, graphitic schists that host the Tsavorite. Rarely does a decent crystal like this appear, so it is easy to make the Garnet identification just by looking at it, even if most Garnets aren't green, because this crystal's form is textbook perfect. The faces are brilliantly glassy, transparency is good enough to be beautiful, and included enough to save it from a gem-cutters fingers. The color is a medium green and there are traces of the schistose host rock that it was once attached to. Condition is pristine, with the only damage confined to contact areas on the edges and back.
    Measurements: 1.2 x 1.1 x 0.7 inches (3.0 x 2.7 x 1.9 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.

    Provenance:
    Rainbow of Africa Collection
