Beer Cellar Mine, Granby, Newton Co., Missouri, USA

"Light blue hexagonal crystals on matrix up to about a quarter inch. Traded from Bryn Mawr with Harold Arndt. From the George Vaux collection."
    - Rock H. Currier

In the 'off-season', farmers around this part of Missouri would dig shallow, underground, workings for the lead ore that commonly occurred under their farms. One such working was in the town of Granby, where odd crystals of a light blue hue appeared in the ore-body of a mine referred to as the 'Beer Cellar Mine'. Whether it was named that because the mine was started in a beer cellar, or for some other reason, is lost in local lore. Curiosity as to the identity of these atypical minerals caused a number to be saved as oddities and later sold through various dealers of the period. George Vaux was able to acquire this one during that period - the back of the label says "3/21/95" (that's 1895). As near as can be determined, the Beer Cellar Mine is now buried under a parking lot next to the fire station in town. There is a custom acrylic stand and the original Vaux label.
