    Description

    Garnet
    Broken Hill, Yancowinna Co.
    New South Wales
    Australia
    1.21 x 0.95 x 0.40 inches (3.09 x 2.42 x 1.04 cm)

The poly-metallic ore body at Broken Hill would not, at first, seem to be a good place to find Spessartine Garnets as they are usually associated with gem deposits. Nevertheless, there was enough Manganese, coupled with the right conditions, for this variety of Garnet to form sharp and lustrous crystals of a deep brownish-red color as seen in this fine example. This group, consisting of one main crystal 5/8 inch (1.55 cm) across, and several collateral ones, resides on a matrix of massive Spessartine. There is one smallish Spessartine missing, but, otherwise, this sparkly piece of the January birthstone is in excellent condition.
