    Variscite, Crandallite & Wardite
Little Green Monster Variscite Mine, Clay Canyon, Fairfield, Oquirrh Mts, Utah Co., Utah, USA

"A polished slab of variscite showing the green variscite, the yellow crandalite and the grey wardite. It probably has other minerals as well. ?"
    - Rock H. Currier

Besides being the "Gateway to Nevada," Utah can boast of some notable mineral localities, some of which have been found, lost and, in a few cases - found again. Several localities have been worked on a sporadic basis: the ones in Clay Canyon are a case in point. Here, nodules of various phosphate minerals, a number of them quite rare, have been mined, chiefly for the lovely green lapidary material Variscite, found in their interiors. The nodules, as mined, are rather drab, but when sawn and polished show, exhibit striking patterns and colors, usually some variety of green. Sometimes, microcrystals of Crandallite and Wardite are found in areas bordering the green sections in a few nodules. That is the case with this polished slab from the Currier Collection and besides it's a face, it's a face (*o*)
