Musonoi Mine, Kolwezi District, Katanga Copper Crescent, Katanga (Shaba), Democratic Republic of Congo (Zaïre)

The Katanga Copper Crescent doesn't just produce Copper and rebel groups. The mineral riches of the Congo go far beyond mere Copper. There are world class deposits of Cobalt, Palladium, Uranium, Tantalum, Niobium, Rare Earths, Gold and gemstones to name just a few of the riches of this area. Strangely enough, the sale of mineral specimens helps the local population far out of proportion to the 'ore' value of those specimens. Money from the sales of specimens directly benefits local miners instead of being exported as profits for extra-national mining conglomerates. It helps that there is keen demand for the exceptionally well-crystallized rare minerals like Vandenbrandeite: a Copper/Uranium mineral shown here. It was obviously an encrustation on the walls of open spaces between fragments of the country rock. There are three minerals involved in the piece: dark green Vandenbrandeite being the prime one. Lighter green Malachite is intermixed with the Vandenbrandeite, and there is a patch of almost fluorescent green Cuprosklodowskite at one end of the specimen. The Bill Pinch label gives a hint as to the rarity and quality of the specimen, since Bill is a walking compendium of mineralogical knowledge, and, as a connoisseur, he has no peer. The limited matrix is a tan mix of breccia fragments.
    Overall Measurements: 2.24 x 1.4 x 1.12 inches (5.69 x 3.58 x 2.85 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.

Provenance: Mineralogical Research, ex. William W. Pinch Collection [Hoppel #D0195]
