Description

Topaz
Hematita, Antônio Dias, Minas Gerais, Brazil
5.4 x 4.2 x 2.9 cm (2.05 x 1.67 x 1.14 in)

Etching is a very desirable quality in Brazilian Topaz, as it results in many fascinating crystal shapes and textures. This specimen from Hematita, Brazil, has a highly unusual but gorgeous etching pattern, which changes throughout the specimen. The main body of the crystal is mostly euhedral and smooth, with a modified termination, but has a few subtle, geometric etches that look more like modified crystal faces. The most interesting part, though, is on the "sidecar," which comes together with the main crystal to form a sharp "L" shape. The top of this sidecar has a more intricate and shining etching, resulting in a pattern that looks like dragon scales. The range of textures in this glass-clear Topaz crystal makes for a delightful, exploratory specimen.

Estimate: $500 - up.
