    Description

    Stibnite
Ambrose Mine, Antimony Peak, Stayton District, Diablo Range, San Benito Co., California, USA

"Mostly a single sharp shiny terminated stibnite crystal of about 2.5 inches long and a cm thick with a few other small stibnites growing on it. The crystal is coated on one side with some brown? Traded this specimen from the George Vaux collection from Bryn Mawr College near Philadelphia when Harold Arndt was still curator."
    - Rock H. Currier

Besides being a locality on a very private ranch, the mine that produced this exceptional specimen, for California, is reputed to be emitting copious quantities of CO2 gas. That it came from the Vaux Collection speaks volumes about its age as well as its rarity. North America isn't exactly oversupplied with decently crystallized Stibnite specimens and this one is a historic rarity in a field of already rarely observed specimens. If you sneak into the locality, ... hold your breath. It has a custom acrylic stand and the original Vaux label.
