    Description

    STANNITE on ARSENOPYRITE
Yaogangxian Mine, Yaogangxian W-Sn ore field, Yizhang Co., Chenzhou Prefecture, Hunan Province, China

The metal Tin has played an important role in human civilization. So much so that the alloy of Tin and Copper: Bronze, became the identifier for a large chunk of human history - The Bronze Age. The Romans called the metal Stannum, and since this rather uncommon mineral has Tin as an essential component, it was a fairly short leap of imagination to call it Stannite. This is a deceptive specimen because the Stannite appears to play second fiddle to the large (1.88 inch/4.6 cm), flashy crystal of Arsenopyrite that it is attached to. The Stannite itself is a group of black, equant crystals up to .25 inch (6.3 mm) across that form a half-cylinder of crystals some 1.63 inches (4.15 cm) in length. The complex faces of the Stannite crystals are slightly iridescent, giving some of them a faint bronze cast on top of the black, semi-metallic luster. A couple of minor Quartz crystals and some trace Muscovite blades complete the accessory mineral picture. The big Arsenopyrite and the Stannite are in fine to excellent condition.
    Overall measurements: 2.5 x 1.75 x 1.5 inches (6.4 x 4.4 x 3.8 cm).

Provenance: Keith Proctor [Hoppel # D1693]
