Makar-Ruz, Tyumenskaya Oblast', Polar Urals, Western-Siberia, Russia

When outsiders talk of 'The Urals' of Russia, little consideration is usually given to the fact that this range of mountains extends for ~2,500 km (1600 miles), almost as far as the Rocky Mountains of the U.S. and Canada. Like the Rockies, they run in a North-South direction, which means that the climate of this range varies enormously. The most northerly portion above 65°N is the section properly called "the Polar Urals" or "Polyarni Ural." The frozen wilderness of the Polyarni Ural is home to this deep red Ruby crystal in a Biotite schist matrix. Chances are that it formed along with the mountains some 300 million years ago. The wine-red, tabular crystal exhibits a glassy luster and a minor amount of transparency. The main crystal measures 1.25 inches (3.15 cm) across where it has been exposed from within the enclosing schist. There are a couple of additional but inconsequential crystals: nothing particularly noteworthy. Condition is excellent.
    Overall measurements: 3.5 x 2.25 x 2 inches (8.9 x 5.7 x 5.1 cm). Offered at no reserve.

Provenance: Western Minerals [Hoppel Catalog # D1653]

[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
