Bombay Quarry, Mumbai District (Bombay District), Maharashtra, India

Few outside of the mineral collecting world realize that when the 'pet rock' craze swept the planet, there already was a 'pet rock': Okenite. This denizen of lava flows, and the cavities therein, was sold into the world market by the ton in the 1970s-80s. What is interesting about this mineral is that the fuzzy fibers are relatively flexible, allowing small children and adults to 'pet' the Okenite without causing damage, at least up to a point. Recently, unscrupulous dealers have taken to dyeing Okenites to increase their market attractiveness. This freestanding stalagmite of Okenite is approximately 3.5 inches (8.9 cm) in height above its acrylic base and is relatively rare since most Okenites appear as fuzzy hemispheres on the walls of lava geodes. Minimally petted by small, dirty fingers; it is therefore fine condition.
    Overall measurements: 3.75 x 2 x 2.5 inches (9.5 x 5.1 x 6.4 cm). Offered at no reserve.

Provenance: David Crawford [Hoppel Catalog # D1461]

[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
