    NEPHRITE JADE
    Jade Cove, Monterey County, California, USA

    The Central California Coast around Jade Cove and Cape San Martin have Serpentine outcrops where part of the Serpentine has been metamorphosed just enough to form Nephrite Jade in rounded botryoidal forms. As the softer Serpentine weathers away the harder and tougher Jade emerges. Besides the shape, the color and the greasy luster serve to distinguish this material from lookalikes. Fifty years ago it was relatively easy to find this botryoidal Jade washed up along the California shoreline just south of Big Sur - but that was then ...
