    Keweenaw Peninsula, Michigan, USA

During the course of mining the enormously rich Copper lodes of the Upper Peninsula, as the locals call it, there were a number of forms of Native Copper encountered that are unique to the area. Rounded, hollow structures of metallic Copper called "skulls" (for their obvious resemblance to the other variety) are found only here. In addition, many of the mines produced actual crystals of Copper as well. What couldn't be anticipated was a hybrid that mixed those two types. As far as we know, this little wonder has no siblings: i.e. there is only one. Like a diminutive Faberge egg, the rounded exterior conceals a sharp dodecahedral Copper crystal peering out from the dark interior of the "skull." Because that crystal blocks the hollow interior of the "skull," there is a different view of the same crystal when viewed from a second "cavity" on the opposite side. The patina is the classic one acquired by Native Copper specimens that have been out of the ground for a very long time.
