Description

Mimetite
San Pedro Corralitos, Chihuahua, Mexico

A fine Mimetite from the famous late 1960s find at San Pedro Corralitos, Mexico - considered the best-rounded (botryoidal) Mimetite find in the world and a one-off discovery that was never repeated. Matte-finish, translucent, yellow-orange botryoids richly and aesthetically cover the front of this sculptural plate. The vibrant Mimetite botryoids range in size from a few millimeters up to just over 1 cm. They are mounded up aesthetically on the piece where the color is dominantly yellow-orange, especially in the central part of the piece, to progressively more yellow at the periphery. Highly representative, classic material from this find and nearly pristine, in a relatively large size. These sell for a premium - they were found in 1969 and remain unique in the world today. Almost none are on the market, and they only come up in the good old collections assembled in the 1960s-1970s as those recycle back to the market. This fine example is also out of the Harold Urish Collection, which was purchased from dealer De Natura Minerals (Les Presmyk). Due to limitations in photography versus the human eye, the color seen on the screen is intense and saturated. It resembles the color of yellow lemon skin in person. It has a slight tinge of orange to it, but not as much as many of these do, and it is yellow compared to the average color from here, which would call orange-yellow. This is probably one of the rarest and difficult to obtain, in this size, of the old Mexico classics and worthy of any great collection. It comes with a custom engraved lucite base.
