    LIDDICOATITE with PHANTOM
Anjanabonoina, Ambohimanambola Commune, Betafo District, Vakinankaratra Region, Antananarivo Province, Madagascar

The term "phantom" has a different connotation for the mineral collecting community. Contrary to the vaguely sinister associations that the word conjures up for collectors of comic books, video junkies, and Death-Metal groupies; the word "phantom" holds only warm and fuzzy meanings for the crystal crowd. It is best understood as a term concerned with the growth history of any given crystal, starting from "infancy" as a microscopic grouping of molecules condensing around a nucleation site and extending to the final moments of growth. All crystals grow in layers the same way pearls do. In most cases, this growth history is invisible to the collectors' eye, but whenever growth conditions (temperature, chemistry) change, or foreign matter enters the system, there is a possibility that an earlier stage in growth will leave a visible record of what it looked like when it was younger. The differently colored "cores" of Tourmaline are phantom crystals. They are 'recordings' of the crystallization process made as it took place. Here high levels of Iron in the early stages of this crystals' growth, produced a black inner crystal visible beneath the glassy and transparent, pale yellow layers deposited at a later stage of growth. Madagascar Tourmalines are famous for their internal patterns, but most have to be sliced and polished to reveal them. Uncut phantoms, as good as this one, are quite rare. Condition is excellent to pristine.
