Chuquicamata Mine, Chuquicamata District, Calama, El Loa Province, Antofagasta Region, Chile

Although superficially and chemically similar to Chalcanthite (Cu2SO4), Kroehnkite (Na2Cu(SO4)2.2H2O) is considerably more rare. The type locality for this exotic Copper mineral is the huge open pit Copper mine at Chuquicamata in the Antofagasta Region of Chile. Turquoise blue, monoclinic crystals to approximately 5 mm cover the upper surface of a gray-white matrix. The condition is excellent, with no observable damage to the display side. Crystal luster is vitreous and, as long as you don't wash it (it is water soluble!), it will stay that way. Old accession number "776" is visible on the obverse which corresponds to a Dana's Mineralogy classification number and is also on the accompanying label from the "Foster Collection."
    Overall Measurements: 3.08 x 2.6 x 1.06 inches (7.38 x 6.6 x 2.69 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.

Provenance: Western Minerals, ex. P. A. Foster Collection [Hoppel #D1859]
