Description
Emerald in SchistIzumrudnye Kopi area, Malyshevo, Sverdlovsk Oblast, Russia
5.4 x 3.1 x 2.9 cm (2.10 x 1.23 x 1.15 in)
Green is a commonly found color in the mineral world, but there isn't quite anything that compares to the green of this Emerald specimen from the mountains of Russia. Colored by traces of Vanadium in the chemical structure of the mineral, this single substantial Emerald prism has an intense pure hue, which glows even without any backlighting. Additional light behind the crystal, however, transforms this specimen from excellent to otherworldly, and brings out the subtle 'zones' of color. The crystal is particularly thick for the species, measuring at over 3 centimeters in diameter. Aesthetics aside, this is a significant specimen for the locality as well, exceptionally large compared to the vast majority of Eurasian Emerald examples. Accenting this crystal is a drapery of Schist matrix over the back and the termination of the specimen, ending as a "hat" on top. Even this Schist is beautiful, with a shining metallic luster and a rich bronze color.
