    Description

    Covellite
West Colusa Mine, Berkeley Pit, Butte, Butte Mining District, Silver Bow Co., Montana, USA

"A cluster of covellite "wheels" up to about a half inch on quartz. Traded this specimen from Fred Johnson."
    - Rock H. Currier

Any Covellite found in a copper mine is one of the first things to go through the mill, based on easy identification and high Copper content. A few were saved by miners as curios associated with their work. All extant specimens are from old material gleaned by those miners and passed down through various hands. This one shows the classic bladed 'wheels' Currier refers to, that are growing from a white Quartz matrix. The specimen has iridescent play of colors on the crystals themselves: gold, purple, and blue. It has been sitting in Rock's collection for over 50 years and now it can sit in yours ...
    Overall Measurements: 2.2 x 1.8 x 1.4 inches (5.5 x 4.5 x 3.5 cm).
    Offered at no reserve

Provenance: Traded from Fred Johnson [RHC #639, acquired 1966]

[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
