    Córrego Frio Mine, Linópolis, Divino das Laranjeiras, Minas Gerais, Brazil

    "A shiny green somewhat transparent sharp single brazilianite crystal about three inches in diameter. I bought this specimen from Sol Shalevitz, Lee Shales father, when he sold his collection many years ago."

    Originally thought to be Chrysoberyl: an understandable mistake based on color and a Brazilian origin. Dr. Fred Pough, who had been sent to Brazil in search of piezo-electric Quartz and Tourmaline, recognized Brazilianite as a possible new mineral. Examining specimens of purported Chrysoberyl, he quickly ascertained that the 'Chrysoberyl' was way too soft. Specimens he purchased then went back to the states where "Freddy," and Dr. Ed Henderson of the Smithsonian, determined them to be a new mineral, which they named "Brazilianite" after the country of origin. Many "Chrysoberyl" specimens in old collections were subsequently examined and a number of them turned out to be the new mineral. The best ones ever found are still from this one area in Minas Gerais. BTW this Brazilianite is one huge single crystal with very excellent color and a tiny bit of matrix.
