Description
AquamarineShigar Valley, Shigar District, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan
9.6 x 2.8 x 1.4 cm (3.78 x 1.08 x 0.54 in)
Shigar Valley is one of the most active and notable sources of Aquamarine specimens, but only a handful from this locality have such striking characteristics as seen in this piece. Embodying the phrase "clear as crystal," this prism of aesthetic Aquamarine is perfectly gemmy. All of the crystal is essentially colorless with only a slight tint of an icy blue, joined by an intense, glassy luster. Much of the Aquamarine's termination is modified, which is predominantly seen from the display view. Included in this gorgeously clear crystal are small, radiating clusters of Schorl that give this specimen the appearance of a terrarium. While smaller ones are visible from the rear view, a single point of Smoky Quartz pokes out from behind the Aquamarine. Like the Schorl, the Smoky Quartz creates a nice contrast that accents the brightness of the specimen. Most of the piece is relatively damage free. There are natural contacts in the lower half of the Aquamarine and two damages at the base of the crystal.
