Description
ALEXANDRITE on MATRIXMalyshevskoe deposit, Izumrudnye Kopi area, Malyshevo, Ekaterinburg, Sverdlovskaya Oblast', Middle Urals, Urals Region, Russia
Few gemstones have captured the public's attention the way Alexandrite has. There is a persistent sense of fascination, almost mythological in character, about this color-changing variety of Chrysoberyl. Named for Czar Alexander II, this distinctive gem material was first found in 1830 in the Ural Mountains, the same locality that this specimen came from. Here the primary Alexandrite exhibits a typical snowflake shape 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) acrosscyclic twin: where three crystals grow out from a common center with a constant 120-degree angle between them. The Alexandrite emerges from a spire of the dark mica schist that is the normal Russian matrix. There are a few minor crystals off to the side for added contrast. A distinct color change is present but is not as strong as it could be. The condition is excellent with no traces of damage.
Overall measurements: 3.44 x 1.4 x 1.55 inches (8.7 x 3.6 x 3.9 cm).
Provenance: The Rocksmiths [Hoppel # D1758]
