The Campiano Pyrite Mine produced some 25+ million tons of Pyrite between 1970 and 1990, and with all that Pyrite tonnage there has been one and only one specimen of Sulfur on Anhydrite. This is that one. Not surprising since the mining of low value minerals is, by necessity, highly mechanized, and any odd or unusual minerals encountered during operations would be sent through the crusher like everything else. There is little or no time spent examining the odd rock that occasionally appears in the muck pile after a blast. What is clear is that the conditions at Campiano are right for Sulfur to form. Anhydrite matrix is known from the mine, and the relationship between Sulfates like Anhydrite and the other Sulfide minerals found in the deposit would make the presence of Sulfur highly probable. Whether someone would be willing and able to rescue several specimens from the crusher is in doubt, but one - maybe so. This large plate is a massive Anhydrite that is covered with bladed Anhydrite crystals liberally overcoated with a sparkling crust of bright yellow Sulfur crystals of various sizes. Some of the Anhydrites appear to be 4+ inches (10.2 cm) long, and virtually all of their exposed surfaces are covered by a thick layer of Sulfur. Condition is excellent with only a couple of minor bruises. From an old Tuscan collection, it has a custom acrylic base.
