DescriptionQuartz Pseudomorph after Andyrite
Ametista do Sul
Alto Uruguai Region
Rio Grande do Sul
12.01 x 7.01 x 5.98 inches (30.50 x 17.80 x 15.20 cm)
This fantastic pseudomorph comes from the region most known for producing Amethyst geodes, but it is not always the February birthstone that is the original mineral in a given formation. In this unusual case, fan-shaped sprays of Anhydrite were replaced by Quartz resulting in this huge "tongue depressor" piece of tan pseudomorphs growing up and out of a thick gray layer of Quartz which was part of some wall of a geode before it was separated from the surrounding basalt lava flow. This stark piece has a really large number of thin Quartz replacements, of which some show minor breakage to the tips as to be expected.

Estimate: $1,000 - up.
