Description

PYRITE "BARS"
Buick Mine, Bixby, Viburnum Trend, Iron Co., Missouri, USA

For some, yet undetermined reason, a few of the Pyrite specimens collected in the AMAX Buick Mine showed an extreme elongation of the normally cubic habit into a square-sided "bars" of stacked cubes with very complex faces on all surfaces. There is a helical twist that is quite pronounced in one of the bars while other bar's 'faces' are straight or slightly wavy. These "bars" normally show up as single ones and occasionally twins are found but three in a group is highly atypical and according to some individuals knowledgeable about this find - this is the only one. Whether or not that is true remains to be seen, so far no others have been reported. Luster is brassy with faint iridescence and except for the attachment point at the base, there is no damage and therefore the condition is excellent. The longest Pyrite Bar measures an impressive and imposing 8 inches in length (20.3 cm). The bars diameters measure up to 2 inches (5 cm) across while even the smallest is 1½ inches (3.81 cm) across.
Overall measurements: 10 x 6 x 3 inches (25.4 x 15.2 x 7.6 cm). Offered at no reserve.

Provenance: Dan Weinrich, with notation "Craig Zellers, K.C., MO (1974)" [Hoppel Catalog # D1928]

[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
