Description

FLUORITE (after BARYTE DISSOLUTION): "THE HELMET"
Hill-Ledford Mine, Rosiclare/Sub-Rosiclare Level, Ozark-Mahoning Co., Cave-in-Rock Dist., Illinois-Kentucky Fluorspar Dist., Hardin Co., Illinois, USA

Most mineral specimens show a fairly simple growth history, but once in a while, there appears a piece that implies a bit more in the way of complex growth dynamics. So it is in the case of this tangible record of shifting chemistry and its consequences in time. This specimen started out in normal fashion with the simultaneous growth of globular Baryte crystal groups over-coated with Fluorite. This period of growth was followed by a shift in chemistry that dissolved the Baryte while leaving the Fluorite. Further growth resulted in deposition of more Fluorite in the form of cubic crystals forming on the walls of the vacant spaces left by the now missing Baryte. Not all of the hollow areas were filled by the new deposits, which left the specimen with a series of crystal-lined cavities when deposition stopped. The resulting form can best be imagined as a group of interconnected hollow chambers with the overall form of a helmet, albeit not one designed for a human head. This extremely unusual specimen was mined in the late 1950s or early 1960s. It was showcased at the 2008 Tucson Gem & Mineral Show during the groundbreaking "American Mineral Treasures" exhibit and it was also prominently featured in the book of the same title. This specimen is in pristine condition. It also comes with a custom labeled acrylic base and the AMT exhibition labels.
