Touissit, Touissit Dist, Oudja-Angad Province, Oriental Region, Morocco

Cerussite: the carbonate of Lead shows up in ore as anything from fine sand to 'snow-flakes' weighing several pounds. One of its more attractive habits is in "arrowhead" or "V" contact twins, formed when two crystals grow in slightly divergent directions while still sharing the same crystal lattice. That this is not just a random orientation is shown by the identical angle formed by the "V' of the all the twins on the piece. Color is variable with the centers of the twins showing a light, almost colorless aspect with chatoyant overtones and the tips of the crystals showing a smoky brown, more transparent appearance. This rather sizable matrix example sports at least ten "V" twins scattered mainly over the top surface with a few on the sides, etc. Smaller crystals, of which there are plenty, tend to adopt a more needlelike habit. Luster ranges from glassy to brilliant, depending on which faces are being viewed and striations also appear on some faces. There are remarkably few broken crystals - only a couple or three visible; unusual, given the weight and delicacy of the crystal attachments.
