Description

    "Apache" Agate
    Nuevo Casa Grandes
    Chihuahua, Mexico

Apache Agates come from a singular location in a remote village in northwestern Chihuahua, Mexico. A small ridge on a ranch near El Apache (hence the name) southeast of Nuevo Casa Grandes which produces the exotic Agates that were first discovered in 1957. The best examples were mined in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The variety is considered much rarer than other types of Agate from the Chihuahua region such as Laguna and Coyamito. That locality seems to be depleted as virtually no new material has hit the market in quite some time.

Serious Agate collectors will know the name Apache Agate immediately, and it will conjure up images of a very particular type of collectible Agate. The Apache Agate has long been a highly sought after variety, due to numerous characteristics specific to the genre. This significant example is first of all a large piece of the beloved material weighing in at a stout 48 lbs. (21.8 kg). While specimens have been known to be upwards of 100 lbs. The nodule has a large polished window as well as a rather complex, and somewhat botryoidal, rind. The appearance and texture of the exterior was one of the confirming indicators that it is an Apache Agate.

Although the coloration and concentric banding are atypical of the Apache variety, numerous experts concur that this specimen is definitely an Apache Agate. While the more typical bright red and orange swirls do not appear with the clear Agate material of the piece, the colors into the rind on the cut and polished face do indicate Apache. This major example features an irregular shaped, colorful core, with thick banding of merlot magenta surrounding the rich, slate blue which is the predominant color over the glassy surface. An inner banding of thin pink and milky white follows toward the center which has clear, fibrous Quartz in a loosely triangular shape, with three linear planes meeting at a central point. The balance of the cut but rough surface feature gold and rust colored intermittent banding with an interesting and intriguing pattern. There are a couple recessed cavities in the mottled section.

This exceptional large Apache Agate does exhibit some resinous coating over some areas which may have been for stabilization. Any visible fracturing is not tactile on the surface and does not appear to impact the integrity of the piece. A rough window of bluish Agate with the same general pattern as on the polished surface protrudes through a section of the exterior which is not consistent with the rugged outer material over the rest of the specimen. However, the piece essentially can rest on this flatter part of the external fa├žade in an attractive display position and orientation.

This is a major specimen of Apache Agate with some very appealing traits. Commonly used for slabbing and cutting, large pieces are very rare and hard to find. This collectible nodule is clearly colorful Apache through and through but likely most desirable as a singular specimen rather than cutting material. This relatively large example was purchased in the mid-1960s and has resided in a private collection since it was acquired. This offering represents a unique and rare opportunity to own a serious Apache Agate.
