Black Pine Mine, Flint Creek Valley, John Long Mountains, Philipsburg Dist., Granite County, Montana, USA

It is a pity that there are so few localities for this attractive Copper/Zinc Phosphate mineral. The Black Pine Mine in Montana produced what are arguably the finest known examples of this deep-blue mineral, during mining operations some thirty years ago. The limited number of specimens that emerged back then were eagerly snapped up by savvy collectors and museums. This fine matrix group features multiple (9+) spear-shaped crystals, some of which are doubly-terminated, covering a matrix of colorless Quartz with a euhedral Quartz crystal in the foreground of the group. The largest crystals are approximately 1 cm in length and there are several in this size. Two crystals on the display side appear to be damaged - a not uncommon occurrence for matrix specimens from this find. Luster and form are the typical: ranging from vitreous to brilliant on various crystal faces. There have been no comparable finds since and any available specimens are coming from old collections. It is accompanied by a label from Mountain Minerals International, bears the number "283" and is currently mounted on a simple, acrylic base.
    Overall measurements: 1.5 x 1 x .75 inches (3.8 x 2.5 x 1.9 cm).

Provenance: Mountain Minerals [Hoppel # D0144]
