Of the Silver sulfosalts (Silver in combination with Sulfur and other metals), Stephanite (Ag5SbS4: Silver Antimony Sulfide) is one of the least often encountered, either in mines or in mineral collections. Stephanite is named for Austrian Archduke Stephan Franz Victor of Habsburg-Lorena, an avid collector of the period. Not only is this mineral present in but a few Silver deposits worldwide, due to the valuable amount of Silver that Stephanite contains and its penchant for appearing chiefly as a non-descript, black material in the ore-body, it is rarely spared from the smelter. Obviously rare to start with, those factors conspire against all but the most notable examples and the end result is that few fine examples of this rare Silver mineral are represented in collections. This fine example is composed of five major prisms up to 1 inch (2.54 cm) in length, some of them doubly terminated, arranged in a random grouping. The luster is a dark metallic one with traces of iridescence on a few areas. This is a mineral for the advanced collector whose appreciation for such rarities informs their collecting criteria.
