Description
Sculptural BenitoiteCalifornia State Gem Mine, Santa Rita Peak, San Benito Co., California, USA
4.6 x 4.0 x 3.2 cm (1.81 x 1.64 x 1.25 in)
The matrix of this Benitoite specimen is completely unique, with a sculptural quality that is closer to abstract art than any typical mineral specimen. The center of this white Natrolite matrix had been etched during specimen preparation, leaving behind only a pyramidal "frame" that is lined all around by deep indigo Benitoite crystals. These sharp, trigonal crystals crest over the top of the matrix, as well as around the sides of the front-most cavity. The luster on these crystals are shiny, contrasting against the matte, marble-like texture of the matrix. There is cleavage on some crystals, but the largest and most important of them are pristine and sharp. Under a shortwave UV light, the Benitoite crystals glow a gorgeous icy blue, a relatively uncommon fluorescent color in the pantheon of UV-reactive minerals. This is an exceptional specimen all-around, and particularly unusual.
