    Description

    RED BERYL
Violet Claims, Wah Wah Mts, Beaver Co., Utah, USA

Of all the various colors of Beryl: Emerald, Morganite, Heliodor, et cetera, the most elusive is a Cesium rich variety with a unique, cranberry red color that is erroneously referred to as "Red Emerald" but is more accurately and simply called Red Beryl. All known occurrences are intimately associated with volcanic deposits, unlike the rest of the Beryl family. The largest and most perfect examples of this Über-rare gemstone hail from the Wah-Wah Mountains of west-central Utah. There, fissures in a bleached and highly altered Rhyolite host an occasional prism or two on the walls. Here we have 8 crystals of simple hexagonal form clustered together on a light tan matrix. The major crystal of the group measures almost 0.75 inch (18.2 mm) in length and is double-terminated: this is quite sizable for Red Beryl. All of the crystals are glassy and remarkably free from the disfiguring inclusions common to this mineral. The sides and bottom of the specimen have been sawn to produce a matrix of appropriate size. The piece is in excellent to pristine condition with numerous transparent areas. It was purchased directly from the mine owner: Rex Harris of Delta, Utah - now deceased.
    Overall Measurements: 1.92 x 1.93 x 1.3 inches (4.89 x 4.92 x 3.32 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.

    Provenance: Rex Harris [Hoppel #D0219]
