Wessels Mine, Hotazel, Kalahari Manganese Fields, Northern Cape Province, South Africa

As ubiquitous as rust is on this planet, crystals of the stuff (Hematite) are actually few and far between. Some come from the Wessels Mine of Hotazel in where Manganese is the actual product being mined. Local wags christened the area "Hotazel" - a bad pun involving the local climate that gets the point across in a tongue-in-cheek fashion. The Hematites of the Wessels Mine show brilliantly reflective crystal faces, making them look like polished black mirrors. Here those mirrors form the sides of a pyramidal Hematite crystal partially over-coated with druzy, deep red Andradite Garnet. Several faces show multiple razor sharp striations in parallel orientation. On the lower front of the pyramid there are five water clear Calcites of double terminated habit and brilliant luster, one of which has been allegedly reattached. This is a world-class example of this mineral and it has few equals in the mineral cabinets of the world.
    Overall measurements: 2 x 1.5 x 1 inches (5.1 x 3.8 x 2.5 cm).

Provenance: Rocko Minerals [Hoppel # D2132]
