    Description

    FLUORAPATITE
Panasqueira Mine, Couto Mineiro da Panasqueira, Covilhã, Castelo Branco District, Portugal

The Panasqueira Mine of Portugal is one of the largest producers of Tungsten in the world. First opened in 1898, the mine has produced over sixty different minerals, two of which were first found there. Among the most desirable are the purple Apatites that appear all too infrequently. This beautiful group of approximately twenty, barrel shaped Apatite crystals is an extremely fine example of the best. Most of the crystal are doubly terminated and show deep purple cores grading to colorless at their terminations. The luster is splendent and is as good as it gets. There is no matrix as such but the backside and "base" of the group shows a bit of Siderite encrustation - very characteristic of Panasqueira material. There is an accession number ("5BI" or "5BT") but no corresponding label or documentation. In closing, between the pristine condition and the rare purple color and fine luster - one can only say "wow!"
    Overall measurements: 1.75 x 2 x 1.25 inches (4.4 x 5.1 x 3.2 cm).

Provenance: Victor Yount [Hoppel # D0131]
