Description

Crystallized Native Gold on Quartz
Eagle's Nest Mine, Sage Hill, Michigan Bluff Mining District, Placer Co., California, USA
4.0 x 3.9 x 3.4 cm (1.60 x 1.53 x 1.34 in)

Native Gold, especially if it is well-crystallized, is the most valuable of the native elements: native meaning pure elements in their natural state, as crystallized in a deposit. This specimen of Native Gold from the eminent Eagle's Nest Mine does not have the more common etched-out amorphous texture, but is actually crystallized as flattened, hoppered, and feathery crystals. This Gold grows along a plane of the near-cubic Quartz matrix, in a thin layer of spectacular metallic yellow. The Gold winds across the face like a dragon rearing its head, with the end of the crystallization displaying the largest of the flattened crystals, just hovering over the edge. Of course, the bright yellow color in this specimen is unadulterated, the epitome of Gold's famous hue. This specimen is incredibly aesthetically pleasing, and the displayability is excellent from all angles, thanks to the clear-cut matrix.
