    Description

    BOLEITE
Amelia Mine, Sta. Rosalia (El Boleo), Boleo Dist., Mun. de Mulegé, Baja California Sur, Mexico

Baja California's answer to the hellish Sulfur Mines of Sicily is "Boleo": a group of underground workings that are hot, wet (100% humidity) and prone to cave-ins. All-in-all, a miserable place that, if it weren't for the excellent specimens of Boleite and the related mineral Cumengeite that have been pried from the deposit, there would be no reason not to let it fade from human ken. The first real period of mining took place around 1885 under a French company until 1954, when the operation went bankrupt and was taken over and run at a loss by the Mexican Government until 1984 when the mines closed. A Korean group is working to re-open the mines currently. The extremely rich ores of the early days included Boleite: a mineral combining Lead, Silver and Copper in a fiendishly complex mixture with Chlorine, Potassium and Oxygen and Hydrogen. It's no wonder it's a bit on the rare side, and the biggest crystals in the world come from Boleo. This pair of cubic crystals are embedded in the typical clay matrix that most of them were found in. Along with the Boleite are light green amorphous masses of Atacamite: another Copper mineral. The largest Boleite crystal measures .375 inch (1.0 cm), the second is about half as large. Luster is glassy and condition is excellent. NB: buyer is warned not to attempt washing the specimen, since the clay matrix will soften in water.
    Overall measurements: 2 x 2 x 1.5 inches (5.1 x 5.1 x 3.8 cm). Offered at no reserve.

Provenance: Keith Williams [Hoppel Catalog # D0928]

[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]

    Estimate: $3,500 - $4,500.
