DescriptionANALCIME on SERANDITE
Poudrette Quarry, Mont Saint-Hilaire, Rouville RCM, Montérégie, Québec, Canada
Rock quarries are normally about as boring as watching the grass grow. That's "normally". The "abnormal" variety can provide attractions that rival Disneyland for the mineral collector. Some have spent all of their free time for years, entranced by the ever-changing smorgasbord of minerals produced by a single quarry. Nowhere is this exemplified so well as at the Poudrette Quarry in Southern Québec. Over 366 separate mineral species are known from here. Some are microscopic and obscure, while others produce examples both fine and large, like this combination of four easily identifiable minerals: Analcime, Serandite, Natrolite and Aegirine and one unidentified one, possibly from the Ancylite Group.
Tha Analcime is a sharply defined and colorless trapezohedron wrapped around some blocky, salmon colored Serandite prisms with elongated white Natrolite popping out of various places. The back side shows an epimorphic "cast' where a now vanished mineral dissolved away leaving a hollow area where smaller Natrolite crystals now reside. Associated with the already mentioned minerals are a number of black Aegirine crystals, of bladed to needle-like habit. The Serandite is gemmy and transparent in areas, with a saturation of color unusual for this mineral and the 1.125" (29 mm) Analcime is a superbly contrasting complement in its geometric perfection.
Overall measurements: 2 x 1.75 x 1 inches (5.1 x 4.4 x 2.5 cm). Offered at no reserve.
