Prospecting on the salt lakes of Western Australia can be extremely difficult, what with the inhospitable environment and the increase in rainfall in recent years, turning the salt lakes into real lakes that take several months to dry out. But the gold specimens to be found there are worth the effort, as this lovely example demonstrates. With only the most minimal signs of water smoothing it has a lovely textured appearance, like crumpled gold leaf; indeed, several sections taper to a leaf-like thinness whilst other portions have well defined concavities and ridges giving it a most attractive character. Measuring approximately 1¾ x 1 x ¾ inches, it weighs in at 2.43 troy oz (75.6g).
