    LARGE STROMATOLITE BOULDER
    Cliff Erie Mine, Minnesota, USA
    Stromatolites are the fossil remains of primitive pre-Cambrian algae colonies - most of the known localities are over two billion years old. The present example is about 3 billion years old. During the period when these colonies flourished in the warm shallow waters that lapped at the ancient continents, there was little or no competition from other organisms because there simply were almost no other organisms. The algae colonies removed iron from the water and built the first reefs on the plant. The rich earth-red colors of this specimen, which is considered the most desirable in Minnesotan stromatolites, are a clue to the mineral's presence here, as is the dark faintly metallic black-gray ground on which the deep red centritic patterns swirl. This outstanding boulder has been highly polished to create a beautiful decorative piece, and mounted on a discrete metal base it stands 16¼ inches high.
