Description

Dendritic Growths (Manganese Dendrites) in Quartz
Brazil
3.5 cm in diameter (1.39 in)

Small but remarkably beautiful, this little Quartz sphere has three main dendrites, most likely Manganese dendrites due to their dark color. Dendrites are named this way due to the root-like pattern that they grow in, but this beautiful fractal design is also reminiscent of a lightning strike. The main Dendrite grows along a very thin internal plane in the Quartz, which has a slight iron staining, segmenting the sphere into two halves, one small and one large. Incredibly, the free-standing dendrite, on the larger side of the stained internal plane, has a gorgeous metallic sheen. Considering that most dendrites are dark and matte, this is an incredible detail to an already beautiful specimen. The vast majority of these Dendritic Quartz specimens are carved into cabochons, so it is incredible that we have a full sphere of this material.

Ex. Rob Sielecki collection.
